Green Peas Palav ( Type 2)
This is one of simplest palav that can be done in a jiffy. Also tastes good when had with any spicy side dish. Being a vegetarian( eggeterian), I had this with egg masala and the rest of them in my family had with chicken kurma. They all like this simple rice which has a a very good taste and flavor.
Basmati rice - 2 cups
Mint leaves - few sprigs
Green chillies - 4 or 5 slit long
Green peas - 1/2 cup ( have used frozen peas)
Cinnamon - 2 stick
Cardamom - 3
Clove - 4
Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
Star seed - 2
Bay leaf - 1
Butter - 2 tbsp- important
Oil - 1 tbsp
Salt as needed
Water - 4 cups
In this recipe I have used jeera rice instead of basmati rice. After many years found jeera rice( under the name kali jeera) at a grocery store in Indianapolis. Just got a bag the moment I saw them. Usually this rice has a very good flavor and considered best for palav/biryani's back home. The size of the rice resembles jeera( cumin seeds), so that name. In B'lore it is called as jeerige akki.
Wash and drain water from rice and set aside for 15 minutes.
Heat oil in a frying pan ( in low flame). Add cumin seeds, cinnamon, clove, cardamom, bay leaf and star seed... wait for few seconds and add slit green chillies and washed mint leaves( have used mint leaves fresh from my garden :))... fry together for less than a minute till the mint leaves shrink ( and also without discoloring). Remove from fire. Transfer rice and the fried ingredients along with peas, salt, water and butter and switch on. If making with jeera rice then use water less than 4 cups. Serve with any spicy side dish and enjoy your simple green peas palav. Usually I mix everything and leave it aside for sometime, so that the flavor gets settled well and then switch on the rice. This tastes too good.
As a variation you can also add ginger garlic paste , sliced onions and or coconut milk - I have this recipe under the category ghee rice/coconut milk rice.
