Onion / Vengaayam/ Ulli paaya/ Eerulli Chutney
Making onion chutney is very simple and does not require lot of ingredients...this is one chutney that is mostly made for idli/dosas to dip with at my place.
Onion - 2 medium( use red onions for good taste)
Garlic - 3 or 4 pods
Red chillies - 3 or 4
Tamarind - 1 inch piece
Salt as needed
Oil - 1 tbsp
Coriander leaves - few sprigs( optional)
For tempering:
Mustard seeds, urad dhal and curry leaves
Cut onions into thick/big pieces. heat a tbsp of oil in a kadai and add chopped onions...saute for 2 minutes and then add garlic, tamarind and red chillies....saute/fry together till onions are transparent. Finally add coriander leaves and mix. Remove and cool for 5 - 10 minutes ...then grind in a mixer using very little water and salt. Do not grind to a fins paste, just turn in few times to grind coarsely. Temper the chutney with mustard seeds, urad dhal and curry leaves.

No tamarind piece is added, no need to add in water and extract pulp.
Yes red chillies is the dried variety.
