Channa dhal curry or kadala paruppu kuzhambu...
tasted this curry few years back at a friend's place and since then making it at home often...This curry is very simple and also can be prepared fast....goes well with idli/dosas and rice.
Channa dhal - 1 cup
Onion - 1 medium chopped fine
Tomato - 2 medium chopped fine
Garlic - 3 pods
Sambar powder - 1 tbsp
Mustard seeds - 1/4 tsp
Urad dhal - 1/4 tsp
Jeera/cumin seeds - 1/4 tsp
Curry leaves - few
Hing - 1 pinch
Salt as needed
Oil - 2 tbsp
Cook channa dhal in a pressure pan for 3 whistles( or until soft)adding 2 cups of water...keep them aside.
Heat oil in a kadai/pan and add mustard seeds, urad dhal, jeera, curry leaves and hing...when they start to splutter up add onions and fry for 2 minutes...next add garlic pods( whole or cut into thin slices) and fry well till onions are golden brown....next add tomatoes...mash to cook till they are pulpy and soft...then add the cooked channa dhal( can also take a handful of channa dhal and mash lightly and add ..for curry to be thick)....add a cup of water, salt and sambar powder....reduce flame and cook for 8 - 10 minutes.
